Cycling: Wurtz Schmidt wins stage 6 of Tirreno-Adriatico, Pogacar retains lead

Mads Wurtz Schmidt sprinted to victory on stage six of Tirreno-Adriatico on Monday, while reigning Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar retained the overall lead of the race. Wurtz Schmidt was part of a six-man breakaway group on the 169-kilometre course from Castelraimondo to Lido di Fermo. Emils Liepins was dropped by the leaders with eight kilometres to go and Denmark's Wurtz Schmidt of Israel Start-Up Nation bested the rest in the ensuing sprint to claim his first stage win in more than four-and-a-half years. Brent van Moer finished in second place ahead of Simone Velasco in third. Pogacar finished in the peloton, one minute and nine seconds behind the lead group. That Slovenian retained his 75-second lead over Wout van Aert at the top of the general classification heading into Tuesday's final stage - an 11.1-kilometre individual time trial.
