Cycling: Formolo climbs to Stage 3 win as Primoz Roglic Primoz Roglic retains overall lead

Italy's Davide Formolo claimed victory in Stage 3 of the Criterium du Dauphine on Friday, after holding on under pressure during the final Category 1 climb to the finish in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville. Formolo, riding for UAE Team Emirates, produced a stunning solo effort following the main climb of the day over the Haute Category Col de La Madeleine and held off a concerted late effort from General Ranking rivals Primoz Roglic of Slovenia and Thibaut Pinot of France to win by 33 seconds. Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) extended his overall lead on Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) to 14 seconds as 2019 Tour de France winner Egan Bernal slipped down to seventh, 31 seconds off the pace. Bernal's Ineos teammates Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome also struggled. Saturday's penultimate stage will take the field over another mountain route between Ugine and Megeve.
