Sports News : UK BMX freestyle boom predicted after ‘huge milestone’ of Olympic success

After winning gold and bronze at the event's Olympic debut, Team GB riders and officials think that BMX freestyle is set to boom across the country. 25-year-old Charlotte Worthington, who was working as a chef in a Mexican restaurant as recently as 2017, shot to fame earlier this month by winning Olympic gold in Tokyo after becoming the first woman ever to land a 360-degree backflip in competition. Training partner Declan Brooks took bronze in the men's event to add to BMX racing gold and silver medals won by Britain's Bethany Shriever and Kye Whyte. British Cycling announced last week it will set up BMX Freestyle Commission to capitalise on the Olympic success and over £1million (1.4m USD) of prior investment, to create a national competition structure, train more coaches and judges and nurture future Olympians.
