Cycling News : Magnificent Martin earns Stage 17 victory, Bernal feels pressure on final climb

A gruelling solo effort from Ireland's Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) earned a hard-fought victory in Stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia in Sega di Ala on Wednesday. Martin completed a personal set of victories in Grand Tour events after attacking from the front of the day's main break at the base of a tough climb to a summit finish, adding to his two stage wins in both the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta. General Classification leader Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) had three seconds shaved off his overall advantage and saw one of his main rivals gain significant time as the Colombian showed signs of weakness for the first time in the race. However, the 2019 Tour de France winner still holds a 2 minute, 21 second lead over Italy's Damiano Caruso (Team Bahrain Victorious). Portugal's Joao Almeida finished second, 13 seconds behind Martin, with Britain's Simon Yates third. The Team BikeExchange rider moved up from fifth into third place overall, 3 minutes, 23 seconds behind Bernal.
