Cycling News : Campenaerts outsprints Riesebeek for debut stage win, Bernal remains in pink

Belgium's Victor Campenaerts won the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday for his first victory in a Grand Tour, and Egan Bernal kept the leader’s pink jersey after a day that was marked by a large crash at the beginning of the route. Campenaerts, of Team Qhubeka Assos, edged out Alpecin-Fenix rider Oscar Riesebeek at the end of the 147-kilometre (91-mile) route from Grado to Gorizia. The duo had attacked from a breakaway approaching the final climb, with rain falling heavily. Nikias Arndt (Team DSM) won a sprint for third, seven seconds behind Campenaerts. Bernal (Ineos Gerenadiers) crossed the line in the peloton, more than 17 minutes after the winner. The 2019 Tour de France champion maintained his lead of 1 minute, 33 seconds over Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange) and remains 1:51 ahead of third-placed Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious). The stage was halted for around half an hour shortly after the start following the mass crash, with several riders having to receive medical attention. Among them was Germany's Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), who was sixth overall at the start of the day.
