Cycling News : Caruso wins Giro d Italia stage 20, Bernal Gomez leads overall

Damiano Caruso has won the penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia from Verbania to Valle Spluga-Alpe Motta on Saturday. The Bahrain Victorious rider mounted his assault at the foot of the Passo della Spluga with 40km to go, where he and Romain Bardet (Team DSM), broke away from overall leader Egan Arley Bernal Gomez (Ineos Grenadiers). With 20km remaining they had extended their lead to 42 seconds. With the finish line only two kilometres ahead, Caruso dropped Bardet and rode on for victory. Bernal Gomez tried to catch him, but was unable, allowing Caruso to close the gap in the Maglia Rosa race and virtually ensure himself a podium finish in Milan on Sunday.
