Tokyo Olympics : Mixed day for India in Tokyo

Lovlina Borgohain beats Nadine Apetz of Germany 3-2 in the women's welterweight round of 16. The Indian boxer progresses to the quarter-finals after a split-decision win. What a dominant performance by Lovlina. She started slowly but then eventually made her presence felt with impressive uppercuts. She relied on counter-punches which Lovlina connected fairly well. She is now the second boxer after Mary Kom to qualify for the quarter-final bout at the Olympics. The Indian men’s hockey team beat Spain 3-0 to register its second win at the Tokyo Olympics. Drubbed 1-7 by Australia in their last match, India produced a spirited performance against world No.9 Spain and scored through Simranjeet Singh in the 14th minute and Rupinder Pal Singh scored in the 15th and 51st via penalty stroke and penalty corner respectively to record a comfortable win in their third Pool A match. India now have 2 wins in 3 matches. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty beat Ben Lane- Sean Vendy 21-17 21-19 in group A match. But despite a win it was bad news for the Indian pair as well the Indian badminton fans that the top Indian Double duo has crashed out of the Olympic Quarterfinals Race even before they had stepped on the court for the 3rd pool match as Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin has beaten World No. 1 Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo of Indonesia which means now it is impossible for the Indians to make it to the quarterfinals The Indian pair of Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker caved in under pressure and failed to qualify for the final of the 10 Metre air pistol mixed team events. The duo finished seventh in Qualification 2 after topping the first phase with 582 at the Asaka Range. They lost the plot completely when the top eight teams battled it out in the second phase. The duo totalled 380 across two series each in the second phase of the qualification. The other Indian team in the event, Abhishek Verma and Yashaswini Singh Deswal, failed to clear Qualification 1 and finished in 17th place, having totalled 564 across six series. The Indian team, consisting of Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan finished 12th with 626.5 points. Deepak Kumar & Anjum Moudgil, on the other hand, finished at 18th rank with 623.8 points. With both teams missing out on advancing to the second qualification stage, India loses out on another chance of winning a medal. India paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal knocked out after losing to China's Ma Long in Men's Singles Round 3 match. Sharath Kamal lost 1-4 and played at his absolute optimum level, especially in the first three games. All he got to show for it is a game.
