BMC team leader Richie Porte crashed out of the race in stage 9. Porte crashed and abandoned with an right shoulder injury. Avermaet crossed in second place and increased his overall lead to 43 seconds. Belgium rider Greg van Avermaet retained yellow jersey after stage 9.
