Hubert Hurkacz set up a first career meeting with Roger Federer by defeating Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells. The 22-year-old Pole backed up a third-round victory over the seventh-seeded Kei Nishikori by outlasting the 24th-seeded Shapovalov. It is the first time Hurkacz, who began the week ranked 67 in the world, has reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 event. Hurkacz was the more efficient when it came to break points, taking three of his four opportunities, while Shapovalov only managed to take three of his eight, with the Canadian actually won four more points overall in the match. The 37-year-old Federer cruised past Kyle Edmund to reach his 13th final at the California tournament.
