Tennis: Djokovic beats Thiem at Australian Open to win 17th Grand Slam title

Novak Djokovic defeated Dominic Thiem in a mega five-setter final to win his eighth Australian Open title for his 17th Grand Slam victory. Djokovic started the Australian Open final in his trademark style by winning the opener 6-4. But the remaining part of the script yet to go through twists and turns, as Dominic Thiem of Austria, 0-1 down, made an astounding comeback claiming two consecutive sets 6-4, 6-2 and the scoreline read 2-1 in favour of seed number 5. Now it was Djokovic’s turn to complete another stunning comeback. He came back after losing 2 successive sets to make it 2-2 by winning the fourth set 6-3 and force a decider. Pressure on Dominic Thiem, who was chasing his maiden Grand Slam title, was clear. The hard-fought tussle for the year’s first Grand Slam trophy culminated as everyone had hoped for. Djokovic won his eighth Australian Open title by defeating Thiem 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena.
