Football: Canada beat Germany 1-0 in the U-17 women's World Cup quarter-final

Canada went into the match on the back of a 5-0 thrashing by Spain in Group D but they showed no ill effects from that chastening experience as they largely dominated the first half. Plenty of neat, intricate play but precious little in the way of chances - the only shot of note came from Canada's Natalie Mauleon which flew wide. The second half was hardly more of a spectacle though Germany did go close with a header from Leonie Koster which landed on the roof of the net. But with eight minutes remaining came the one moment of true quality - a sweeping move from Canada down the left saw Kaila Novak's low cross converted first time by Jordyn Huitema. Germany did go close to an equaliser with a curling shot just past the post from Sophie Weidauer but the goal from Huitema was enough to set up the semi-final against Mexico
