Cycling: Ryan Gibbons wins opening stage of Virtual Tour de France

South African Ryan Gibbons won the opening stage of the Virtual Tour de France on Saturday, with Briton April Tacey claiming victory in the women's race. Led for most of the four laps of a 9.1-kilometre course by his NTT Pro Cycling team-mate Edvald Boasson Hagen, national champion Gibbons timed his final sprint to perfection and took the stage win. Pier-Andre Cote and Nick Schultz finished in second and third place respectively. In the women's race, which was held over the same course, 19-year-old Tacey outsprinted Kristen Faulkner and world time trial champion Chloe Dygert to finish in first place. The event, which is being held over three consecutive weekends, sees professional riders from all over the world competing via the Zwift online cycle training programme.
