Cycling: Ewan wins stage 16 at the Tour de France

Lotto Soudal's Caleb Ewan won the 16th stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday, powering past the field to take his second stage victory of the race. The Australian accelerated over the last 100 metres to come from eighth to first and pushed Elia Viviani into second and Dylan Groenewegen back into third. Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) during the 177 kilometre stage that started and finished in Nimes. Defending champion Geraint Thomas suffered a crash with over 130 km to go, after skidding around a corner when his gears jammed. The Team Ineos rider escaped largely unscathed, with just a few scratches on his left elbow but managed to rejoin the peloton. Julian Alaphilippe retained the yellow jersey with Thomas a further one minute and 35 seconds behind in second place overall.
