Cricket News: Virender Sehwag on not taking up India's head coach role

Even after retiring from international cricket, Virender Sehwag continues to make headlines. It is either for his expert judgement on a particular player or for his exploits in T20 league games such as the Road Safety Series.

In one way or another, the former India cricketer has remained in the news on a regular basis. Sehwag is known for his outspoken remarks, but he just made an unusual revelation.

He explained why he did not accept the position of head coach of the Indian squad after his counterpart Anil Kumble stepped down. The former India opener revealed that he was invited to take on the post by Virat Kohli and then-BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary.

The former Indian opener discussed about how he was approached for the head coach role, Sehwag said

"I wouldn't have applied if Virat Kohli and then BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary hadn't approached me. We had a meeting, and he (Choudhary) told me that things weren't working out between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumblewe want you to take the coaching position.. He told me that Kumble's contract will expire after the Champions Trophy2017 and then you can travel to West Indies with the team,"

Sehwag told News 18 Chaupal. The veteran further added saying,

"I didn't say yes or no, but I said if I travel to West Indies, I would want my coaching staff, the assistant coach, bowling coach, batting coach and the fielding coach. I want my own choice for the support staff and I didn't get that choice so I didn't travel to West Indies,"

Sehwag was a top-tier player in his day, and his level of expertise was ideal for someone in the position of head coach.

Although consistently demonstrating his abilities as a player, the veteran never led the Indian team as a full-time captain. When asked if he had any regrets about not getting the chance to wear the captain's hat, he said:

"Not at all, I'm happy with what I achieved. Coming from a small family of farmers from Najafgarh I got the opportunity to play for India, got so much love and appreciation from fans and even if I would have captained Team India I would have gotten the same respect."
