Cricket News: R Ashwin on the brink of surpassing Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev’s record

Experienced Indian spinner R Ashwin is poised to eclipse a number of significant milestones. These are the records currently held by legends Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev.

Ashwin gets the ideal chance to write new records when India hosts Australia in the third of the four-match Test series. The 4th Test will be held at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on 1st March.

The seasoned player needs eight more wickets to match Anil Kumble's 111 wickets against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Also, Ashwin (686 wickets) needs two more to surpass Kapil Dev's record of 687 wickets in international cricket.

Ashwin will want to take advantage of the chance to surpass the significant milestones in the upcoming two matches. Ashwin has established himself as a key component of the Test team.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was easily retained by Rohit Sharma and company following the total defeat in the first and second Tests.

Australia's search for a spot in the finals of the ICC World Test Championship for the 2021-23 cycle also continues as a result of their consecutive defeats.

His excellent bowling prowess was on full show in the first two Tests when he claimed 14 wickets.

Interestingly, Australia hasn't had any success in India since their previous series victory there in the 2004-2005 season. Thus, India is already dominating the series by 2-0 and Ashwin has a very good chance of clinching the record.

Meanwhile, the Australians will try to tie the series with two games left in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Since Pat Cummins was compelled to leave for his home owing to family obligations, Steve Smith will captain the team for the third Test.

Team India is in the process of securing a spot in the final game of the international ICC event. India, captained by Rohit Sharma, only needs one victory from each of their remaining two red-ball matches to clinch the position.

The two cricketing behemoths will face off in a three-match ODI series following the completion of the Test series, which is set to begin on March 17 at Mumbai's illustrious Wankhede Stadium.
