IPL Auction 2023: Which players received highest pay cuts?

The IPL 2023 auction, which has ended, had many unexpected developments. While players who did not take part in the previous season smashed all records and received the highest bids, those who took part in the IPL 2022 experienced drastic pay reductions.

There have also been cases where players who last season received payments in crores have been sold for their base pricing. As numerous teams engaged in a bidding battle to sign them, overseas stars

Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes, and Harry Brook, who did not take part in the IPL 2022, attracted the highest bid. All-rounder Curran was recruited by Punjab Kings for a whopping INR 18.50 crore, making the Englishman the most expensive player in IPL history ever.

While these athletes sought the big earnings, several of them experienced a sharp drop in value from the previous season. Romario Shepherd, WI all-rounder, was purchased by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the IPL 2022 auction for a staggering INR 7.75 crore.

However, he was unable to elicit high bids this time after being signed by Lucknow Super Giants at a base salary of INR 50 lakh and receiving a 1550% pay drop. When he last competed in the IPL in 2021, New Zealand's pace sensation Kyle Jamieson made headlines.

Before deciding to withdraw from the IPL 2022, he signed a deal for INR 15 crore with Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 1 crore, representing a 1500% pay decrease, upon his return to the league.

Odean Smith, a player from the West Indies who was acquired by Punjab Kings for INR 6 crore, was another player from the region to draw significant interest at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Prior to the IPL 2023 auction, the organisation released him despite some excellent performances. He was then signed by Gujarat Titans at a pay cut of 1200% from his original price of INR 50 lakh.

Jhye Richardson played for Punjab Kings in his previous IPL game in 2021 after signing an INR 14 crore contract with the team. He only managed to draw one bidder at the most recent IPL 2023 auction, though, as Mumbai Indians signed him for his basic price of INR 1.5 crore. Richardson consequently saw a wage decrease of 933.33%.

For INR 1.6 crore, the Mumbai Indians franchise purchased Murugan Ashwin, who played for them in the IPL 2022. But this time, he came up short because the Rajasthan Royals signed him for his base salary of INR 20 lakh, which amounted to an 800% pay decrease.

Speaking of the variations in player salaries between the previous IPL season and the upcoming one, a few cricketers experienced a significant decrease in pay. As his compensation decreased from INR 15 crore to INR 1 crore, Kyle Jamieson suffered a loss of INR 14 crore.

Jhye Richardson suffered a loss of INR 12.25 crore, while former SRH captain Kane Williamson suffered a loss of INR 12 crore as his pay decreased from INR 14 crore last season to INR 2 crore. Mayank Agarwal lost INR 5.75 crore and Romario Shepherd lost INR 7 crore as his pay decreased from INR 14 crore to INR 8.25 crore.
